Lloyd Webber Cats

Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. His shows have run continually in the West End for 50 years and on Broadway for 43. 

When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, CATS, and The Phantom of the Opera, Lloyd Webber equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is also one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards. 

Lloyd Webber owns six London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Reopened in July 2021, the latter was completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It was one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra is that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings. 

Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music in Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. 

Lloyd Webber has composed music for globally significant moments, including Olympic ceremonies and World Cup celebrations. He has also been asked to compose for many royal occasions, the most recent being “Make a Joyful Noise”, an Anthem for the  

Coronation of King Charles III. Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992, created an honorary life peer in 1997, and made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles III in 2024. 

From 1968 to 1986, he was the longest serving artistic director of the RSC, directing most of the Shakespeare canon, as well as Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables.

From 1997 to 2003, he was director of the National Theatre, where his productions included: The Merchant of Venice, Summerfolk and The Cherry Orchard, as well as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady and Anything Goes. He has directed the world premieres of Arcadia, The Coast of Utopia and Rock ‘n’ Roll by Tom Stoppard, and of Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Aspects of Love and Starlight Express by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

A seminal influence on British dance and musical theatre, Dame Gillian Lynne started her career in 1942 at age 16 before joining the Sadler’s Wells Ballet Company in 1944, where she became a soloist performing at the newly opened Covent Garden Opera House, as detailed in her autobiography, A Dancer in Wartime. Her many roles with the soon-to-be renamed Royal Ballet included the Black Queen in Checkmate, the Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty and Queen of the Willis in Giselle.

Following her successful performing career as the star dancer at the London Palladium and on early British TV, as well as being Britain’s foremost exponent of Jazz Dance, Lynne went on to be a leading director/choreographer of her generation. Notable ballet credits include: A Simple Man, Lipizzaner and The Brontës for Northern Ballet; Journey for the Bolshoi Ballet; Some You Win for Irek Mukhamedov’s Company and The Fool on the Hill for the Australian Ballet.

Best known for her groundbreaking work on CATS and The Phantom of the Opera, Lynne has directed over 60 productions in the West End and on Broadway, including the UK premiere of Jerry Herman’s Dear World in 2013. She has worked on 11 feature films and hundreds of television productions as producer, director, choreographer or performer.

She has mounted productions of CATS across the world, including productions in New York, Vienna, LosAngeles, Amsterdam, Paris, Moscow and Sydney. 

In 2014, she released a landmark exercise DVD aimed atmature audiences entitled Longevity Through Exerciseand, in October 2014, she recreated Miracle in theGorbals for the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Lynne has received numerous accolades includingtwo Olivier Awards - the first for Outstanding Achievement for her Choreography of CATS in 1981– while, in 2013, she was presented with a LifetimeAchievement ‘Special’ Olivier.

Other awards include: Vienna’s Silver Order of Merit; Golden Rose of Montreux Award for The Muppet Show; Samuel G Engel Television Award (USA) for her conceptual drama Morte d’Arthur; a BAFTA for her dance drama A Simple Man, which she directed for BBC TV; a Molière Award; and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award from the Royal Academy of Dance, who elected her vice-president in 2012. Lynne was honoured with a CBE in 1997 and made a DBE in the 2014 New Year honours list for her services to dance and musical theatre, the first woman to be honoured in this way.

Shortly before her death in 2018, the New London Theatre was officially renamed the Gillian Lynne Theatre.

John studied fine art at Hornsey College of Art in the early 60s and subsequently theatre design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under Ralph Koltai.

These productions have been presented on Broadway and around the world.

Other designs for the West End include: Time, Children of Eden and Jesus Christ Superstar. John designed the Captain EO video, starring Michael Jackson for Disney. He created and co-directed the spectacular Siegfried and Roy Show at the Mirage in Las Vegas, followed by Steven Spielberg’s film Hook. He is an associate designer of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Notable productions for the RSC include: Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors, King Lear, Once in a Lifetime, The Greeks, Nicholas Nickleby, Hedda Gabler, Peter Pan and Mother Courage and Her Children.

John Napier’s design awards include: four Olivier Awards, a BAFTA, and five Tony Awards for Nicholas Nickleby, CATS, Starlight Express, Les Misérables and Sunset Boulevard. 

Mr Napier is a member of the American Academy of Achievement, was elected Royal Designer for Industry in 1996 and is an honorary fellow of the London Institute.

Bill Deamer is one of Britain’s leading choreographers and directors. 
 
He started his career when, employed as lead dancer in a production of Cabaret in the West End (choreographed and directed by his mentor and lifelong friend Dame Gillian Lynne OBE), he was offered the opportunity to choreograph his own version of Cabaret at Salisbury Playhouse. From there he has never looked back. He was reunited with Gillian Lynne when he was invited by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Trevor Nunn to create the new tap choreography for the critically acclaimed revival of CATS at The London Palladium in 2014 (which has subsequently run worldwide) 
 
Notable Theatre productions include: Hello Dolly (London Palladium); 42nd Street - (Sadler's Wells, UK and international tour); The Corn is Green – (National Theatre); the critically acclaimed Follies – For which Bill was nominated for the Olivier award for Best Choreographer (National Theatre); The Osmonds - A New Musical (UK Tour); The Boy Friend (Menier Chocolate Factory); Top Hat- For which Bill won the Olivier Award for Best Choreographer (Aldwych Theatre).The show went on to enjoy two acclaimed productions in Tokyo with both a British and a Japanese company; Sondheim on Sondheim (The Royal Festival Hall); The 50th Anniversary UK tour of The Sound of Music and Evita (Dominion Theatre); Saturday Night Fever (West End /UK Tour & Tokyo).   

Bill is also a very successful choreographer for film and television – recent credits include: Christmas Carole for SKY Television; The Real Full Monty; So You Think You Can Dance; ITV’s All Star Musicals and the hit BBC series Strictly Come Dancing, where he continues to contribute featured group professional routines, show dances and Charleston’s.  

Throughout his career Bill has also become an expert on Fred Astaire, one of his dance idols. He directed and choreographed the first- ever tribute to Fred at The London Palladium and has appeared in ITV Perspectives programme For the Love of Fred Astaire. 

As well as producing three of the world’s longest-running musicals — Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and CATS — his landmark productions include Miss Saigon, Oliver!, Mary Poppins (co-produced with Disney), Side By Side By Sondheim, Little Shop of Horrors, The Witches of Eastwick and Five Guys Named Moe. He has also staged acclaimed revivals of My Fair Lady, Oklahoma! and Carousel, and reinvented long running new productions of Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera and Oliver! 
Cameron recently presented the joyous Sondheim musical celebration Old Friends in the West End (with a terrific cast headed by legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga) that will arrive on Broadway in spring next year. Cameron is co-producer with Jeffrey Seller of Hamilton in London and on tour in the UK. 

In 2012, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the hugely successful Oscar®, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of Les Misérables, which is one of the most successful movies ever of an original stage musical. To celebrate over 10 years since its release, the movie has been remixed and recently re-released in full Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision in selected cinemas around the world, as well as a new home vision 4K Blu-ray disc and iTunes download version of the film. The staged concert version of Les Misérables has proved to be just as successful as the original musical and is returning this autumn to stadiums and stages around the world in a much anticipated spectacular arena tour – which is already mostly sold out in the UK.  

The concert version of Les Misérables has been filmed three times – at the Royal Albert Hall, the O2 Arena and the Gielgud Theatre – and is continually rescreened on TV and in cinemas throughout the world and, alongside his spectacular Royal Albert Hall production of The Phantom of the Opera, regularly breaks attendance records for live recording performances of musical theatre. Cameron owns and operates eight historic London theatres, which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21st century. They house many of London’s most successful hits. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, now has a glorious auditorium and backstage and has been renamed in honour of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical legend Stephen Sondheim, who passed away in 2021. The last show he and Cameron were working on, Old Friends, had an all-star gala premiere at the Sondheim Theatre in 2022 and was later screened on BBC TV. In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his visiting professor. The current Professor is world-renowned director, Gregory Doran. Music Theatre International, one of the world’s oldest and largest libraries of secondary rights of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies. Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre and in June 2023, was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. He is the first British producer ever to be elected to Broadway’s Theater Hall of Fame. 

Chrissie appeared in the original West End casts of Billy, Irene, Evita, Barnum and Blondel and in variety at the London Palladium and Victoria Palace.

Television includes The One and Only Phyllis Dixey, There’s Something Wrong in Paradise, The Stanley Baxter Show, The Morecambe and Wise Show and The Good Old Days.

She appears in The Great Muppet Caper, Lassiter, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and Mama Mia! Here We Go Again.

Chrissie staged and choreographed the original West End productions of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Sherlock Holmes The Musical and the London premiere of Mack and Mabel.

She choreographed The Entertainer, Devil’s Virtuoso, Annie, The Card, On The Twentieth Century, Witches of Eastwick and the musical staging for the Showbizpops Orchestra’s concert tour of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. For television she choreographed Kiss Me Kate, Alas Smith and Jones and Hit Dancing.

As associate director and choreographer - the London, New York and Australian productions of Five Guys Named Moe, worldwide productions of CATS and as associate choreographer, the London and Broadway productions of The Phantom Of The Opera. She was associate to Gillian Lynne on The Likes of Us, Brick by Bricusse and Dear World; was children’s director on Mary Poppins and resident director on CATS, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sister Act and Wizard of Oz.

Chrissie directed To Gillie With Love at the Gillian Lynne Theatre and was movement director on The Private Ear and The Public Eye and Birdsong for the Original Theatre Company. She is an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music where she has staged many productions including This is The Hour – a celebration of the music of Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Resident Director and Choreographer 

Dane trained at Shena Simon/City College Manchester and the Urdang Academy Covent Garden London. 

Upon graduation he joined the UK Tour of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers followed by the UK and International tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang choreographed by Gillian Lynne. 

He made his West End Debut in the award winning production of La Cage aux Folles creating the role of the moody drag queen/cagelle Angelique. He was also involved with the Broadway workshop including all the publicity for the New York run and the US Tour. 

Dane was then cast as Swing in the European Tent Tour of CATS beginning his long association with the show, understudying and playing Mr. Mistoffelees, Mungojerrie, Skimbleshanks and the majority of the ensemble roles. Upon his return to England he joined the UK and International Tour of CATS which led him to be part of the Original West End Revival at The London Palladium - getting to work alongside the Original Creative Team of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Trevor Nunn, and Gillian Lynne. Dane was then asked to audition for the role of Neleus in Disney’s Mary Poppins and spent 6 months in the show in Vienna. The day he left Vienna he flew straight to his home town and rejoined the CATS Tour once again. Dane has been involved with CATS now for 14 years, and it has taken him around the world and to over 100 cities, from Athens to Amsterdam and Dubai to Hong Kong. Dane became the Resident Director in 2018 for the Taiwan Tour. Since then he has helped re-stage the show with Chrissie Cartwright on numerous occasions and looked after productions in China, Europe, Taiwan, Manila and Singapore.

Born in Cumbria, Dan studied music at the University of Huddersfield and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri on 26 September 1888. He was educated at Harvard, at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England in 1915 and taught briefly at two schools before joining Lloyds Bank in the City of London in their foreign and colonial department. 

His first volume of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917. The Waste Land, his most famous work, came out in 1922. In 1925 he left the bank to become a director of the publishing house of Faber. There have been several collected editions of his poetry and volumes of his literary and social criticism. 

T. S. Eliot also wrote a number of verse plays, the best-known of which, Murder in the Cathedral, was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival of 1935. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats appeared in October 1939. Eliot had a great affection for cats and ‘Possum’ was his alias among his friends.

Four Quartets, generally regarded as his masterpiece, was first published as a single work in 1943. T. S. Eliot became a British citizen in 1927. He received many honours and distinctions, among them the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was awarded posthumously the 1983 Tony Award for the book of CATS. He was also an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur. 

He died in London in 1965 and there is a memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey.

Since his arrival in London from New York many years ago, David Hersey has designed the lightingfor hundreds of plays, musicals, operas and ballets. 

He was lighting consultant to the National Theatre for ten years and is a past chairman and current fellow of the Association of Lighting Designers.
In 2002, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University. 

His many awards include: Tonys for Best Lighting Design for Evita, CATS and Les Misérables, plus the Olivier Award for Best Lighting Design for Burning Blue,The Glass Menagerie and Twelfth Night. He received Tony nominations for The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby, Starlight Express, Miss Saigon and Oklahoma! and Olivier nominations for Oliver!, Glengarry Glen Ross, Martin Guerre, Oklahoma!, South Pacific, My Fair Lady and The Coast of Utopia. The production of My Fair Lady received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. For Equus (West End and Broadway), he received a Tony nomination and won the Drama Desk Award for Best Lighting Design. 

Recently, he lit Merrily We Roll Along at the Chocolate Factory and Harold Pinter Theatre, WestEnd. The production received an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. He lit the original production of Merrily on Broadway 30 years ago.

A keen yachtsman, David completed a two-year sabbatical, during which he sailed his yacht around the world. David founded DHA Lighting, industry leaders in the design and manufacture of specialist lighting equipment and effects. He has designed lighting extravaganzas at the Mirage, Treasure Island and Bellagio hotels in Las Vegas, and his work can be seenin theme parks in Florida and Italy.

David Cullen studied composition with Howard Ferguson and Richard Rodney Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1960s. Subsequently, he has worked as a keyboard player, composer, record producer and arranger. He is best known as the orchestrator of musicals in London and New York, particularly those of Andrew Lloyd Webber: CATS, Starlight Express, Song and Dance, Aspects of Love,Sunset Boulevard, By Jeeves, Whistle Down the Wind,The Beautiful Game,The Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in White and, most recently, Love Never Dies. 

He received the New York Drama Deskaward for the orchestrations of The Phantom of the Opera, was nominated again for Aspects of Love, and was nominated for a Tony for his re-orchestration of Tchaikovsky’s music for the Broadway production of Swan Lake.

Other musicals he has orchestrated include: Abbacadabra, Children of Eden, Shogun - the Musical, Stepping Out, Edna: the Spectacle, and some London revivals: Can-Can,The Baker’s Wife, Carmen Jones, the Donmar production of Parade and The Wizard of Oz London production. 

Records which he has arranged include: The America album by the King’s Singers, Christmas With Kiri by Kiri Te Kanawa, and I Am What I Am by Shirley Bassey. He both arranged and produced the albums Music of the Night by Cantabile and Julian Lloyd Webber Plays Andrew Lloyd Webber by Julian Lloyd Webber. 

He has composed music for several UK television series including: Relative Strangers, Surgical Spirit and The Bretts. He re-orchestrated sections of Jesus Christ Superstar, CATS and Evita for the movie and video productions. He provided orchestrations for the Disney productions of Geppetto and Cinderella and the movie of The Phantom of the Opera.

Graham is a Musical Supervisor for Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. 
He is currently the Musical Supervisor for Oliver! - Chichester Festival Theatre (also conductor) and Starlight Express - 30th Anniversary Production in Bochum, Germany.

Greg started work over 40 years ago in British repertory theatre and has since worked on many productions worldwide, both as a sound designer and engineer. Specialising mainly in large-scale musical theatre and arena productions, touring shows all over the world.

He designed the sound for the UK premieres of Carmen Jones, the only stage adaptation of the film Some Like It Hot with Tommy Steele, and the Liverpool Oratorio for Paul McCartney. Greg is currently the associate designer for the new world tour of Beauty and the Beast.

For the London stage, his designs include: CATS. Howard has been involved in CATS since the original London production. He has designed the lighting for many productions including those in Cape Town, Berlin, Madrid, Moscow, a big tent in Germany and now for this latest tour. 

His lighting design credits include plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, as well as for West End and commercial productions. His company designs and manufactures lighting and special effects equipment for shows and attractions worldwide. 

Projects include the design and manufacture of the flying car for the West End musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the opening and closing ceremonies for London 2012.

Peter was Musical Director for the most recent European / Scandinavian tour of CATS. 

He was Associate Musical Supervisor for a new production of the show in Vienna and the international tour which opened in Shanghai in 2019 and was also Musical Associate on the new Universal / Working Title movie version. 

He was Musical Director for CATS in South Korea in 2020 / 21, and Taipei in 2022. Peter was the Musical Director / Supervisor for To Gillie, With Love – a celebration of the life and career of Dame Gillian Lynne.

Jamie grew up in Inverness, Scotland where he trained at his local performing arts school TFX, before moving to Glasgow to join the Musical Theatre course at The Dance School of Scotland. After 2 years Jamie then furthered his education at Laine Theatre Arts in Surrey. Jamie’s credits include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory UK Tour (Swing) and CATS on Royal Caribbeans Oasis of the Seas (Pouncival). 

Ben Walsh trained at Laine Theatre Arts

Quinlan is an Australian-born singer and actor who trained at the Ballarat Arts Academy, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theatre. 

International credits include Swing/Cover Old Deuteronomy & Bustopher Jones/Gus/Growltiger in Cats (Korea & Taiwan); Lead Vocalist aboard Celebrity Cruises; and Chase in Paw Patrol Live.  

Australian credits include Caldwell B. Cladwell in Urinetown; Linus Van Pelt in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Ensemble/Cover Thomas Malloy in The Beautiful Game; Priest in Bare: The Musical; Michael in Tick, Tick... Boom!; and Cover Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever.  

Opera credits include King of the West in The Enchanted Pig (Australian Contemporary Opera Company), Il Viaggio a Reims (Opera Australia), and Don Giovanni (Opera Australia). 

Jack began his professional training at Bird College Conservatoire, graduating in 2020 with a first class BA Hons Degree and the Musical Theatre Achievement award of 2020. Jack is very excited to bring back the role of Rum Tum Tugger after two years and showcase this phenomenal production across Europe!
